One Piece is a weird outlier though. I watched the anime first, and I enjoyed everything that was not filler. Then, somewhere in the Impel Down arc, there was a 5 episode filler added to promote one of the movies, but the arc was really good, so I jumped to the manga from that point to see what happened next.

One Piece has a very slow start, but it's one of the few mangas that just keeps getting better with every passing volume. If you're at the Arlong Park arc, I'd suggest sticking with it for a bit longer. Just keep in mind that it's still a shonen, so many of the shonen tropes still apply to it.
